Top 5 Reasons for Premature Hydraulic Pump Failure in Excavators.

Jul 11, 2026

The hydraulic pump is the "heart" of an excavator. Premature failure leads to sluggish machine operation, soaring oil temperatures, and a sharp drop in efficiency, necessitating immediate shutdown and major repairs. Many pumps don't die of natural causes, but rather their lifespan is prematurely shortened by improper use and maintenance. Based on frontline maintenance data, premature hydraulic pump failures are mostly due to the following five main reasons.

1.Oil contamination: the primary cause of wear and tear

Industry statistics show that 60%–70% of hydraulic pump failures are caused by contamination. Dust, metal shavings, and silt entering the system are like adding abrasives to the pump, quickly scratching the plunger, cylinder, and distributor plate, causing irreversible wear. Failure to replace filters on their expiration date, not filtering oil, and operating the pump with the nozzle open during maintenance all allow impurities to enter. Darkening of the oil and the presence of copper and iron powder are warning signs of severe pump wear.

2.Cavitation: Silent internal explosion

Cavitation is often caused by poor oil suction: low oil level, clogged oil suction filter, air leakage in the oil suction pipe, and failure to preheat low-temperature, high-viscosity oil. Localized vacuum bubbles form inside the pump, and when these bubbles burst, they create high-frequency impacts that corrode the plunger and slipper, accompanied by abnormal noise, vibration, and pressure fluctuations. This can cause pitting and peeling of pump components within a short time, significantly shortening their lifespan.

3.Sustained high temperatures: catalysts that accelerate aging

When oil temperature consistently exceeds 80°C, the oil rapidly oxidizes and deteriorates, leading to decreased viscosity, lubrication failure, and accelerated aging of seals and friction pairs. Cooler blockage, poor heat dissipation, excessively high return oil back pressure, and persistent system overflow can all contribute to elevated oil temperature. High temperatures cause abnormal expansion of the plunger clearance, exacerbating internal leakage and creating a vicious cycle of "heating—wear—more heating."

4.Reckless operation and prolonged overloading: Enduring loads exceeding design limits

Prolonged full-load operation, forced pressure build-up, and vigorous operation keep the pump under peak pressure and flow conditions for extended periods. The swashplate, plunger, and bearings are subjected to impacts and stresses far exceeding their design specifications, leading to rapid fatigue crack propagation. Many excavators, in order to meet deadlines, operate continuously at high intensity without proper buffering of the pump body, resulting in severe wear and internal leakage within just a few months.

5.Lack of maintenance and incorrect oiling: details determine lifespan

Failure to change the oil on schedule, mixing different brands of hydraulic oil, or using inferior oil will damage the oil film and the compatibility of the friction pairs. Misalignment during installation, loose pipelines, and failure to replace aging seals in a timely manner will cause leaks and secondary pollution. Neglecting to check oil levels, inspect filters, and measure pressure routinely will allow small problems to fester into major malfunctions, leading to premature pump failure.

The lifespan of a hydraulic pump depends half on its quality and half on its use and maintenance. Maintaining oil cleanliness, strictly controlling oil temperature, avoiding rough handling, and following maintenance procedures can minimize the risk of premature failure. A properly maintained hydraulic pump can easily last thousands more hours, saving not only on repair costs but also on the benefits of uninterrupted operation.
